Linking of rivers

Filed under: River — admin @ 8:39 pm

In our country which is full of natural resources, ‘water’ has always remained precious and that’s why people used to worship water bodies such as river Ganges, river Vaigai etc., since the golden olden days. After the Indian independence, various States have been formulated by our politicians and various water bodies with the origin in a particular state have been ‘copyrighted’ by the respective statesmen within the ambit of their state. The dams have been built for the storage of the water and the water for the irrigation would be provided from these dams. During monsoon the dams will invariably be full and the discharge will start diminishing once the summer starts and the rain falters. The states will always fight among themselves to share this ‘stored’ water of the rivers in the dams and thus started the concept of ‘linking’ of rivers, which ‘on paper’ might seems to the ideal solution for the sharing of water between various states. But the legal hurdles it has to face on its path is too much and the actual ‘linking’ of the rivers has run into rough weather with the politicians making hay while the sun shines. The various states in between the water bodies have started objecting to the ‘linking’ process thereby stalling the progress of this good notion for ending the water drought facing our country, ever since we gained our independence.
